Thought is was worth commenting, in case anyone else is left scratching their head trying to program a recently purchased (2020 onward?) DM-1702... I'm unsure what software comes on the included disc (who has a disc drive these days (?)), but all of the software I could find online that is listed for programming the DM-1702 is not longer compatible, due to newer firmware (unsure which version broke the compatibility however).
Plugged in, the radio SHOULD be listed as 'No Printer Attached' (Universal Serial Bus controllers) in Device Manager... it's not a printer obviously, but just the way it works.
When I (and a few other people apparently, according to my searches to try and find a solution) plugged the radio in, it appears in Device Manager correctly... but when trying to read data from the radio, the software gave the error 'Read data failed!', the radio briefly flashed the message 'PC Program, USB Mode' and then restarted.
It wasn't until I stumbled upon a single post on QRZ forums (https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/baofeng-dm-1702-unable-to-program.738903/page-2) that I realised what was going on... and even better, a solution—you need to use software designed for the Retevis RT72, which is pretty much identical to the DM-1702 ('Sony guts').
