CarCheck BODY: Rust; bent panels; loose or missing exterior trim; these cars look tatty quickly. ENGINE/GEARBOX: Some starting problems; whining gearbox typical, not usually a worry. OTHER ITEM: Minor electrical faults. For Bargain basement prices; tough engines Against Noisy and unrefined; badly built; no fun to drive Time has not been kind to the Samara. Even though it was launched in the late '80s, it feels like a much older design. Uncomfortable and unrefined, it has few road manners and stodgy handling - it's no fun to drive. Fit and finish are poor, too. But with mid-'90s examples fetching £1,500 or less, some people are tempted by them. Samara is best ignored - if you're short of cash, there are plenty of older models that offer better quality motoring for the same money.
Value = 1 Cheap does not mean cheerful; even tidy ones are inferior cars.
Costs = 3 Easy to maintain and repair; low insurance; poor fuel economy.
Reliability = 2 Mechanically durable but badly built; regular servicing important; prone to rust; paintwork is often sub-standard.
Performance = 2 Adequate, but 1.1 and 1.3 are rough when pushed; gutsy 1.5 is best choice if you can stand the noise.
Comfort = 1 Harsh ride; fairly roomy interior spoilt by poor seats and cheap upholstery.
Image = 1 You can't even use irony as an excuse for buying one; fails to meet modern standards; for masochists only.
Safety = 1 Flimsy build does not inspire confidence; no significant crash protection or safety features.
Security = 1 Door locks are about it; not favoured by thieves (now there's a surprise).
