A big idea is a new simple solution for a relevant customer problem or dream. That's my definition.
Everybody knows the television show where a jury looks for talent with the X factor, that “certain something" that makes for star quality. a big idea has the X factor.
An idea with the X factor is very appealing to (new) customers, very appealing to your company and can be brought to life quickly. In my own innovation practice these three core qualities lead to seven characteristics for great ideas for innovative products, services or business models:
Very appealing to customers.
It stands out in the market.
It has great potential for extra turnover.
It has adequate profit potential.
It fits management’s business goals.
It is (somehow) considered quickly feasible.
It creates its own internal support.
Recently I discovered a wonderful example. Oil company S Oil wanted to show it had a mission to save oil. South Korea's capital Seoul had some of the highest gasoline consumption in the world and car use was increasing, petrol costs rising, and parking spaces scarce. A Seoul driver wanders for 500m every day to find a space. Over a month, this comes to 15km of driving. People were using around a litre of gas just trying to park.
Their idea was to tell people there was a parking space right here. With HERE balloons, They set up a yellow balloon in each space. The balloon falls when a car parks in the space, and rises again when the car leaves. Drivers could see the colourful balloons from far away and spot empty spaces. Quick parking meant saving time and saving oil.
